I should probably mention straight out that I am a bit of an exercise fanatic, so it follows on that my solution to jet lag is exercise. Having said this, I really have found exercise to be the most effective for me. I don't suffer from severe jet lag, but I do find that I invariably have a dull headache for a week. For me, the most effective way to shorten this from a full week to a couple of days has been exercise – and lots of it.
I often find when I travel that I am unable to sleep when I arrive – a new city with new sights and restaurants and clubs! This is particularly annoying when arriving in the evening and I know I should sleep to try and accustomize to the new time zone, but instead find myself watching tv or thinking about the following day, still on New York time.
If I can go to the hotel gym (or failing this go for a run) in the morning and evening, I find myself much more tired and relaxed - and more able to get at least some sleep. This normally translates into a clearer head in the morning.
