Jet lag on a honeymoon

When my husband and I went on our honeymoon, we only had a few days off from work. We were going to Rome, and I didn’t want to spend the entire time cooped up in our room, tired and jet lagged and unable to enjoy the few days of vacation we had. We did a little research into what causes jet lag and worked out a plan to prevent it. It worked like a charm – we had a lovely four days in the Centro Storico looking at ruins and eating fresh-baked pizza. Here's our recipe for a jetlag free honeymoon:

Figure Out the Time Zone Difference

From New York to Rome, the time difference is six hours. That means when it's midnight here, it's six in the morning there. That's the difference between time to go to bed and time to wake up! Before you go on your honeymoon, be sure you know what the time difference is so you can figure out how best to adjust to it.

Take Only a Brief Nap

To get onto a new time schedule, we found out the best way is to simply stay up until bedtime in the time zone you're landing in. That would be very difficult, since New York is ahead of Roman time, not ahead! Instead of staying up an extra six hours, we’d have to stay up an extra eighteen! That seemed like it would just make us really irritable on the flight over, even if we felt great when we woke up our first day in Rome.

We weren't prepared to start bickering so soon after the wedding, so we created a compromise. Instead of sleeping a full eight hours on the plane (very hard to do anyway), we took a nap, about three hours. It was enough sleep to make us feel a little refreshed and less unhappy, but it was little enough that we were definitely ready for bed when 11:00 Rome time rolled around – even though it was six hours earlier in New York.
